I once watched a movie about a couple of hostage negotiators. The only line I remember was a question; "Am I talking to the man in charge?" In the opening chapter of the Revelation, the author is concerned to establish the final authority of Jesus the Messiah. This is important because what follows are 7 letters to various churches. What Jesus says in these letters probably won't matter much if readers aren't convinced he has the authority to address them. By means of startling images and descriptions, the author reveals Jesus as someone we should listen to. How carefully do we weigh the words of Jesus to his Church?
